Should you ask a loved one to MC your wedding?

This is something I chat to couples about all the time, because asking a friend or family member to MC your wedding seems like the obvious choice.

They know you, they’re already going to be there, they’ll probably do it for free and let’s be honest, we all know someone who loves getting their hands on a microphone.

But before you give them the job, there’s something I want you to think about.

They’re already a guest at your wedding, so do you actually want them to have a job as well?

Think about who you’re going to ask. Your best mate, your brother or sister, someone from your wedding party? Chances are they’re also one of the people you really want to enjoy the day with you.

Because being an MC isn’t just getting up a few times and introducing speeches. They’re also keeping an eye on what’s happening, knowing when things need to start, making sure the right people are ready and probably answering a few questions along the way.

Meanwhile, everyone else is three champagnes in and having a lovely time.

I’m not saying your friend or family member won’t enjoy themselves, because plenty of people love being an MC and are bloody good at it. But they do have a job to do, and that means they never completely switch off.

And that’s where having me MC your reception can make a lot of sense.

By the time your wedding comes around, I already know you. We’ve spent months chatting, I know your story, I know how you want the day to feel and I already know what’s happening.

I’m also already there!

So you don’t need to spend the week before your wedding giving your mate a crash course in your timeline and explaining who all your suppliers are when they could be concentrating on the important things, like what they’re wearing and how many drinks they can reasonably have before dinner.

For me, MCing isn’t about taking over your reception or trying to be the funniest person in the room. Nobody needs that.

It’s about keeping things moving, letting everyone know what’s happening, working with your venue and suppliers and making sure you don’t have to worry about any of it.

And your wedding day goes FAST. I tell my couples this all the time and then afterwards they tell me, “You were right, it went so quickly.”

So I want your favourite people enjoying it with you. I want your sister on the dance floor, your best mate at the bar, your brother laughing during the speeches and your wedding party actually getting to enjoy the party.

That doesn’t mean having a friend or family member MC is a bad idea. If you’ve got someone who genuinely wants to do it and will be great at it, absolutely go for it.

I just think it’s worth asking yourself whether you want that person running part of your wedding, or whether you’d rather they just be there enjoying it with you.

Sometimes your best mate doesn’t need a job.

They just need a drink and a dance floor.
